Captain Smith and I had a lovely weekend visiting Michigan’s “thumb” last weekend. The blue waters of Lake Huron and the Blue Water River Walk draw us back time after time. And we love watching freighters as they sail to and from distant ports! We highly recommend you visit if you’re in the area! On our way home we followed the St. Clair river south to Marine City, home of Michigan’s Titanic Memorial.
Michigan’s Titanic Memorial is on the banks of the St. Clair River in Marine City’s Nautical Park. Listed on the bronze ship’s wheel is the name and destination of each Michigan-bound passenger. There were 69 “Michiganders” aboard the Titanic when she sank.
After some reflection we walked down the street to the Mariner Theater. Several months earlier we tried to visit but unfortunately arrived an hour after they closed. Last Sunday we were excited to *finally* see the theater’s Building of an Icon Exhibit. This exhibit has the official builder’s model of Titanic! Sadly, when we arrived, there was a sign on the door saying the theater had unexpectedly closed that day! It was both funny and sad at the same time. Oh well.
The rest of the afternoon was spent drinking coffee and reading through our script for “An Evening on Titanic”. The weather was gorgeous and we saw several freighters on the St. Clair river. We plan to visit again in a few months and maybe take in a show at the nearby Riverbank Theatre. Hopefully “third time’s a charm” and the Titanic exhibit will finally be open for a visit! 🙂
